Review
A General Rewards Card Without a Clear Niche
The Standard Chartered Visa Platinum Credit Card is a general-purpose rewards card that offers accelerated points on selected spending categories but lacks a strong defining feature. While its earning structure appears competitive at first glance, its overall value is constrained by unfavourable airline miles conversion rates.
Cardholders earn 8X reward points on overseas spending and 5X reward points on dining and grocery transactions, with all other local spending earning 1X reward point. There are no published monthly caps on these multipliers, making the earning structure simple and predictable.
An additional 5,000 bonus reward points are awarded in any monthly billing cycle where online spending reaches RM1,500. While this provides a small incremental boost, its impact is limited once converted into airline miles.
Reward points can be converted into airline miles across several frequent flyer programmes. However, conversion rates are relatively high, typically requiring 33,000 points for 1,000 miles for programmes such as KrisFlyer and Asia Miles, and 46,000 points for 1,000 miles for Enrich. As a result, the card is not well suited for cardholders focused on efficient miles accumulation.
Supporting features include a 0% Easy Payment Scheme at selected merchants, emergency overseas card replacement, and full compatibility with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
The minimum income requirement is RM96,000 per annum. The principal card carries an annual fee of RM250, with a two-year annual fee waiver for new cardholders.
Verdict: The Standard Chartered Visa Platinum is best viewed as a basic rewards card rather than a travel or miles-focused product. Given its high income requirement and weak airline miles conversion rates, most cardholders at this income level are likely to find better value from alternative cashback or travel cards in the market.
