A Tiered Cashback Card with Tight Limits
The Standard Chartered Simply Cash Credit Card is a straightforward cashback card built around a tier-based spending structure. While its headline cashback rates appear attractive on paper, actual rewards are heavily constrained by low monthly caps and a relatively high income requirement.
Cashback is divided into two monthly spending tiers. For cardholders with total monthly spending below RM2,500, both petrol and grocery plus dining earn a nominal 0.5% cashback, subject to a global cap of RM10 per month.
Once total monthly spending reaches RM2,500 or above, the card unlocks 15% cashback on both petrol and grocery plus dining spend. However, each category is capped at RM20 per month, resulting in a maximum achievable cashback of RM40 per month. Any spending beyond the capped amounts does not earn additional cashback.
The card recognises a defined list of grocery merchants, including AEON, AEON BIG, Jaya Grocer, Lotus’s, Mydin, Village Grocer and other major supermarket chains. Dining spend is grouped together with grocery under a shared cashback category.
Supporting benefits include a 0% Easy Payment Scheme for eligible transactions, e-commerce purchase protection of up to USD200, emergency overseas card replacement, and full support for Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
The minimum income requirement is RM96,000 per annum. The principal card carries an annual fee of RM250, which is waived in the first year only. No published long-term annual fee waiver mechanism is stated.
Verdict: The Simply Cash card offers modest cashback potential for small, controlled spending in petrol and grocery categories, but its low monthly caps and high income requirement limit its competitiveness. At this income level, cardholders may find stronger cashback value and flexibility from alternative cards in the market.
