A Shopee Coins Card for People Who Actually Use Shopee
The Maybank Shopee Visa Platinum is built around one idea: turning everyday spend into Maybank Shopee Coins, which you can then use as discounts on Shopee (at Shopee’s usual redemption rate of 100 coins = RM1). The headline value comes from Special Days, where the earn rate jumps meaningfully—so this card rewards timing more than volume.
The reward structure is simple once you split it into two buckets. For Shopee spend, you earn 2x on normal days and 5x on Special Days. For offline-friendly categories like Dining, Entertainment, and Contactless, you earn 2x on normal days and 4x on Special Days. Everything else generally earns 1x. The catch is the monthly ceiling: rewards are capped at 5,000 coins per statement cycle, which is effectively ~RM50/month if you fully redeem at 100 coins = RM1.
That cap shapes the “right” way to use the card. If you already spend on Shopee regularly, the card is easiest to optimise by deliberately moving your bigger Shopee orders (and selected offline spend) into Special Days. On the flip side, if your spending is spread evenly across the month, you’ll still earn coins—but the card’s advantage becomes more incremental rather than dramatic.
Maybank also excludes e-wallet reloads and certain payment types from earning, so don’t treat it as a reload-to-win tool. Instead, think of it as a retail cashback card disguised as coins: it performs best when you’re comfortable redeeming value inside the Shopee ecosystem.
Verdict: A practical, campaign-driven card for Shopee users who can plan purchases around Special Days. If you can consistently hit the monthly coin cap, it becomes a clean, repeatable way to offset Shopee spending—without needing to track niche merchant lists.
Pros
- Strong Special Days earn rates: 5x on Shopee spend and 4x on dining/entertainment/contactless.
- Broad offline usability on Special Days thanks to the contactless bucket (not limited to Shopee-only use).
- Clear monthly value ceiling (5,000 coins ≈ ~RM50) makes it easy to know when to stop.
- Shopee Coins can be redeemed on Shopee and via ShopeePay.
Cons
- Monthly cap of 5,000 coins limits upside for high spenders once you hit ~RM50 value.
- Normal-day earn rates are much less exciting, so value depends heavily on timing purchases.
- E-wallet reloads and excluded transactions do not earn coins, reducing “hackability”.
- Best value is locked inside the Shopee ecosystem (coins are most useful when you actively redeem on Shopee/ShopeePay).
