From Points Powerhouse to Niche Companion
The Maybank 2 Cards Premier Reserve American Express® is part of the same premium tier as the Maybank Visa Infinite, sharing similar income requirements and annual fee structure. Historically, this card occupied a very different position within Maybank’s portfolio—prior to its revision, it was widely regarded as one of the bank’s strongest points-earning cards.
Following its revamp, the card’s rewards structure has become more restrained. Cardholders earn 5x TreatsPoints per RM1 on overseas spend and 2x TreatsPoints per RM1 on local spend, with certain categories such as utilities, education, EzyPay and insurance earning only 1x. While these rates remain competitive on paper, they closely mirror what is already available through other Maybank premium cards.
One notable omission is the lack of airport lounge access, which significantly affects its standalone appeal at this tier. Compared to the Maybank Visa Infinite—offering unconditional lounge access—the Premier Reserve Amex relies primarily on dining, golf and travel insurance benefits to justify its positioning.
Additional perks include travel insurance coverage of up to RM1 million, selected hotel dining privileges, golf access, and a 10,000 TreatsPoints welcome bonus for new principal cardholders. These benefits are meaningful, but largely supplementary rather than decisive.
Verdict: The Maybank 2 Cards Premier Reserve American Express® is best viewed today as a legacy premium card with a narrower audience. While it remains functional for overseas spend and Amex-specific dining privileges, its revised rewards structure and lack of lounge access mean it no longer stands out as a primary points card. For most users, the Visa Infinite or World Elite Mastercard now offer a more complete and practical premium package.
