Limited appeal if you pay in full every month
The Maybank Islamic Nadi Mastercard Credit Card-i offers a fixed 14% effective profit rate per year, no annual fee and no compounding of profit charges. It does not earn TreatsPoints or cashback. For everyday spending, I find little here that would make me choose it over another card.
The policy background helps explain why this card exists. Malaysia's government and Bank Negara Malaysia have supported the introduction of Basic Credit Cards, with financing rates capped at 14% per year and simpler structures without ongoing rewards. The aim is to provide a more affordable credit option and help existing cardholders reduce financing costs.
Nadi allows a one-time transfer of eligible retail balances from other Maybank credit cards, excluding profit charges, subject to approval and the available credit limit. For someone already paying a higher rate on those balances, moving them to Nadi could reduce the financing bill.
Before doing that, I would compare dedicated Balance Transfer plans. Some offer 0% or low promotional rates for six or twelve months. If you qualify and can afford the required repayments, a short BT plan may cost considerably less. However, 0% does not always mean zero cost. Check upfront fees, applicable taxes, repayment requirements and the charges on any balance left after the promotional period.
Nadi's 14% rate is ongoing rather than a short promotional rate, but I would not take that as a reason to repay slowly. 14% per year is still expensive borrowing. If a short BT repayment schedule is unaffordable, compare longer instalment plans or loans based on effective annual rates, fees and total repayment amounts. A loan's advertised flat rate is not directly comparable.
The minimum income requirement is RM24,000 per year, and both principal and supplementary cards have no annual fee. There are other cards around this income level with no annual fee and spending rewards, so these features alone give me little reason to apply. Nadi also remains subject to RM25 service tax per card each year.
Verdict: I would not apply for Nadi for everyday spending. It may help reduce the cost of existing Maybank card debt, but I would compare Balance Transfer and other repayment options first. For those who pay in full every month, the lower rate offers little practical benefit. My approach is to spend only what I can afford to repay and clear the full statement balance by the due date. A credit limit is not extra income, and a lower financing rate should not become a reason to spend more.
