A Niche Cashback Card Built Around ESG Spending
The Maybank myimpact Visa Signature is a purpose-built cashback card centred on ESG-friendly spending categories, rather than a general everyday rewards structure. Its headline feature is 8% cashback on selected ESG-aligned merchants, covering modern use cases such as EV charging, public transport, car-sharing and e-hailing, pharmacies and wellness stores, education, sporting goods, and solar-related services.
Outside ESG spending, the card offers a secondary 0.5% cashback on contactless payments, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. This applies broadly to everyday tap-to-pay transactions but carries a separate monthly cap of RM35. Combined with the ESG cashback cap of RM35, the maximum achievable rebate is RM70 per month, assuming both caps are fully utilised.
It is important to note that the card excludes several common spending categories, including petrol, utilities, airlines, government-related payments, and e-wallet reloads. As such, it is not designed to replace a conventional cashback or points card, but rather to complement one by covering categories that are often unrewarded elsewhere.
From a holding-cost perspective, the card is easy to keep. It comes with a lifetime annual fee waiver and a reasonable RM36,000 minimum income requirement. Unlike many entry-level cashback cards, it also includes up to RM2 million in travel insurance coverage when travel tickets are fully charged to the card.
Verdict: The Maybank myimpact Visa Signature works best as a specialised ESG cashback add-on, not a primary spending card. Its value lies in rewarding modern, sustainability-aligned expenses that are typically excluded by mainstream cards. Used alongside a broader everyday card, it can meaningfully improve overall cashback efficiency—but on its own, its narrow scope and low caps limit its impact.
