A lower-entry Amex card with useful weekend cashback
The Maybank 2 Gold Cards are the lower-entry version of the Maybank 2 Cards pair. The main reason to consider them is still the American Express card. You get a paired Visa or Mastercard as backup, but most of the reward value comes from using the Amex card well.
The clearest benefit is 5% cashback on eligible Amex spending during weekends. The cashback is capped at RM50 per month, so about RM1,000 of eligible weekend spending is enough to use the full cap. There is no monthly minimum spend to unlock the cashback, which makes the card fairly easy to use.
The main catch is Amex acceptance. If a merchant accepts American Express, the weekend cashback is straightforward. If not, you can still use the paired Visa or Mastercard, but you will not get the same cashback value. This card works best if you already know where you can use Amex regularly.
On weekdays, the Amex earns 5x TreatsPoints. That is useful, but points are not the main reason to apply. The simpler value is still the weekend 5% cashback. Selected categories such as petrol, utilities, insurance and education earn only 1x TreatsPoint, and e-wallet reloads do not earn cashback or TreatsPoints.
The card is easy to keep. The annual fee is free for life, although RM25 service tax applies to each card annually. Since this is a two-card package, the total service tax cost is worth factoring in. The Amex card also supports Apple Pay and Google Pay, which makes it easier to use at merchants that accept contactless Amex payments.
The Gold version has a lower minimum income requirement of RM30,000 per year. It also includes travel personal accident insurance coverage of up to RM300,000 when full travel fares are charged to the card.
Verdict: The Maybank 2 Gold Cards make sense if you want the Amex weekend cashback structure at a lower income requirement than Platinum. The main appeal is the same: 5% cashback on eligible weekend Amex spending, with no annual fee and no monthly minimum spend. Platinum gives higher travel insurance coverage, but for cashback use, Gold already covers the key value.
