HSBC’s Most Flexible Miles Card for Frequent Travellers

The HSBC TravelOne Credit Card is HSBC Malaysia’s most travel-centric offering for retail customers, designed for users who prioritise overseas spending, dining and travel-related purchases while retaining flexibility across multiple airline frequent flyer programmes.

The rewards structure follows a bonus-and-base model. Cardholders earn 7× Reward Points on foreign currency spend, capped at 20,000 points. Local travel spend (hotels, airlines and travel agencies) and local dining earn 4× Reward Points, each capped at 10,000 points. All other eligible spending earns the base rate of 1× Reward Points. As with other HSBC cards, bonus categories are subject to individual caps and require tracking for optimal returns.

One of TravelOne’s defining features is its extensive list of airline transfer partners. Points can be converted to more than a dozen frequent flyer programmes, including Malaysia Airlines Enrich, airasia rewards, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Avios, Flying Blue, Aeroplan and others. Conversion rates vary significantly: airasia rewards (12:1) and Enrich (21:1) are relatively more attractive, while most long-haul carriers sit at higher ratios, resulting in a generally average cost-per-mile.

Travel benefits include 6 complimentary Plaza Premium Lounge visits per calendar year, shared between the principal and supplementary cardholders. Lounge access is available in Malaysia (KLIA Terminal 1), Singapore and Hong Kong. This shared access model differentiates TravelOne from HSBC Visa Signature, which limits lounge usage to the principal cardholder.

Insurance coverage is comprehensive for a card in this segment, offering up to USD250,000 in travel insurance, including travel medical, flight and baggage delays, baggage loss and COVID-related coverage. Cardholders also receive e-commerce purchase protection of up to USD200.

Additional design and usability features include a blind notch for improved accessibility and a card body made from 100% recycled plastic. The card supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

The minimum income requirement is RM102,000 per annum. The annual fee is RM300 for the principal card and RM150 for supplementary cards, waived with a minimum annual spend of RM20,000.

Verdict: HSBC TravelOne is best suited for travellers who value flexibility across multiple airline programmes and want a single card for overseas, dining and travel spending. While its lounge coverage remains limited to three locations and its miles efficiency is not best-in-class, the breadth of transfer partners and shared lounge access make it a practical choice for users who prefer optionality over pure optimisation.

Pros

  • Wide selection of airline transfer partners
  • Strong bonus points on overseas, dining and travel spending
  • Plaza Premium Lounge access shared between principal and supplementary cards
  • Comprehensive travel insurance coverage
  • Supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay

Cons

  • Bonus categories subject to relatively low caps
  • Miles conversion rates are average for most airlines
  • Lounge access limited to KLIA T1, Singapore and Hong Kong
  • High income requirement for the overall reward efficiency
  • Requires active tracking to maximise bonus points
