A Contactless-Centric Rewards Card with Lower Holding Cost
The HSBC Platinum Credit Card sits just below HSBC’s Visa Signature offering and shares the same rewards ecosystem, but with a different spending emphasis and a significantly lower cost of ownership. Despite its Platinum branding, the income requirement remains the same as Signature, while annual fee waiver conditions are considerably more accessible.
The rewards structure is built around everyday spending. Cardholders earn 7× Bonus Reward Points on contactless transactions, capped at 3,000 points. Additional bonus categories include 4× points on groceries, selected online spending (each capped at 3,000 points), and overseas spending in local currency, capped at 6,000 points. All other eligible spending earns the base rate of 1× Reward Points.
As with other HSBC cards, bonus points are calculated using a bonus-and-base stacking model. Once the relatively low bonus caps are reached, further spending continues to earn only the base rate, limiting the duration of higher effective returns each month.
Reward points can be converted into airline miles at the same rates as HSBC Visa Signature. Redemption rates include 12,000 points to 1,000 AirAsia points, 21,000 points to 1,000 Enrich miles, and 25,000 points to 1,000 KrisFlyer or Asia Miles, placing overall miles efficiency in the mid-range of the market.
Non-points benefits are relatively light. The card includes access to the Mastercard Southeast Asia Golf Programme, offering discounted green fees at selected golf clubs, and is issued using 100% recycled plastic. It also supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
The minimum income requirement is RM102,000 per annum. The annual fee is RM240 for the principal card and RM120 for supplementary cards, waived with a minimum annual spend of just RM6,000, resulting in a lower long-term holding cost compared to higher-tier HSBC cards.
Verdict: HSBC Platinum is best suited for users who prefer contactless and everyday spending rewards within the HSBC ecosystem, and who value a low-maintenance card with flexible fee waiver conditions. While bonus caps are modest and overall miles efficiency mirrors Visa Signature, the significantly lower annual fee threshold makes it a more forgiving long-term holding for moderate spenders.
