A Disciplined Cashback Card with Tight Category Control
The HSBC Amanah MPower Platinum Credit Card-i is a tier-based cashback card designed for users who can plan and concentrate their monthly spending. Cashback rates increase meaningfully once total monthly spend reaches RM2,000, with enhanced returns on petrol, selected groceries and selected eWallet transactions.
Under the higher tier, petrol earns 8% cashback capped at RM15 per month. This cashback is bonus-only, meaning cashback stops completely once the cap is reached. Selected groceries and selected eWallet transactions earn 7.8% bonus cashback, also capped at RM15 per category, and continue to earn a small base cashback thereafter.
Eligible grocery merchants are limited to Giant, Lotus’s, AEON BIG and Mydin. Eligible eWallet transactions are restricted to Samsung Pay, GrabPay, Touch ’n Go and FavePay. Users should verify that their regular spending aligns with these merchants in order to fully benefit from the card’s structure.
The card carries a relatively high minimum annual income requirement of RM102,000 and does not offer an automatic annual fee waiver, resulting in a higher long-term holding cost compared to many mass-market cashback cards. While returns can be reasonable when spending is tightly controlled within the eligible categories, flexibility is limited once category caps are reached.
On the positive side, the card supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, offering full digital wallet compatibility.
Verdict: Best suited for disciplined users who can consistently meet the RM2,000 threshold and concentrate spending within the specified categories. Outside of this narrow use case, the capped structure and annual fee make it a more selective proposition.
