Review

A strong weekend cashback card for everyday spending

The HLB Wise Credit Card is now mainly a weekend cashback card for offline spending. It still covers very normal categories: dining, petrol and groceries. That makes it easier to use than the word "weekend" might suggest, as long as you can plan some spending around Saturday and Sunday.

To unlock the higher cashback rates, you need at least RM1,000 total monthly spend. Once you meet that, weekend dining earns 15% cashback, while weekend petrol and groceries earn 10% cashback. If you do not meet the RM1,000 spend requirement, cashback drops to 0.2%, so this is not a card for occasional use.

The card is quite similar to UOB One in spirit. Both cards reward everyday categories with high cashback rates and small monthly caps. HLB Wise is easier to trigger because the monthly spend requirement is RM1,000, compared with UOB One's RM1,500. The trade-off is timing. Wise gives its best rates mainly on weekends, while weekday dining, petrol and groceries earn only 0.5%.

The caps are also tight. Dining has a shared monthly cap of RM20 across weekday and weekend dining. Petrol and groceries each have a shared monthly cap of RM15. That means the card works best for smaller, planned category spending, not large purchases in one category.

The revamp also made the card less attractive for online spending. Online transactions such as Lazada, Shopee and Grab earn only 1% cashback, capped at RM15 per month. If you want a card mainly for e-commerce, HLB Wise is no longer the obvious choice.

One practical advantage is digital wallet support. The card supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, which matters for a card focused on offline spending. It is easier to use at restaurants, petrol stations and supermarkets without always taking out the physical card.

The minimum income requirement is RM24,000 per year. The annual fee is RM98, with a supplementary card fee of RM48. There is no automatic annual fee waiver shown, so the fee should be included when judging the card's real value.

Verdict: The HLB Wise Credit Card is still useful if your spending naturally fits weekend dining, petrol and groceries. It is similar to UOB One, but more dependent on weekend timing and more friendly to digital wallet users. The RM1,000 monthly spend requirement is manageable for many users, but the small category caps and RM98 annual fee mean you need to use the card regularly for it to make sense.
