A Broad-Based High Multiplier Card for Everyday Spending
The Hong Leong Bank Sutera Platinum Credit Card is positioned as a mass-market rewards card focused on maximising points from everyday spending. With a relatively low income requirement of RM36,000 per annum, it offers one of the widest 8X reward coverage among HLBโs points-based cards.
Cardholders earn 8X Reward Points on a broad range of categories, including online spending at selected platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, Grab, Touch โn Go and major subscription services, as well as dining, groceries, pharmacies and essential spending, and overseas transactions. All other eligible retail spending earns a base 1X point. This structure makes the card particularly effective for local, day-to-day usage rather than niche or category-specific optimisation.
Reward Points earned can be converted into airline miles, with conversion rates varying by programme. Conversion to AirAsia points is relatively attractive, requiring 9,000 points for 1,000 AirAsia points, resulting in an effective cost of approximately RM1.13 per point under 8X earning. Conversion to Enrich is less compelling at 24,000 points for 1,000 miles, translating to an effective cost of around RM3 per mile.
The card supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay for contactless spending. It carries an annual fee of RM120 for the principal card and RM60 for supplementary cards. At present, there is no published automatic annual fee waiver, which should be factored into long-term value considerations.
Verdict: The HLB Sutera Platinum Credit Card is best suited for users who want a simple, high-multiplier card for everyday local spending, particularly those collecting AirAsia points. While its earning coverage is broad and easy to use, its value diminishes for Enrich redemptions, and the lack of a clear annual fee waiver mechanism limits its appeal compared to other mid-tier HLB options.
