A GSC card for frequent moviegoers
The HLB GSC Platinum Credit Card is mainly for people who go to GSC cinemas often. This is not a general cashback card, and the points are not the main reason to apply. The real value is in the movie ticket discount, GSC F&B discount and new cardholder movie tickets.
The most direct benefit is the RM6 discount on each GSC movie ticket, capped at 12 tickets per day. That is useful if you often buy tickets for family or friends, not just for yourself. Cardholders also get 30% discount on F&B at GSC cinemas, which helps if you usually buy snacks or drinks at the cinema.
New Platinum cardholders can receive 10 free movie tickets. That is more than the Gold version, but it is mostly an upfront benefit. For long-term use, the ticket discount, F&B discount and points structure are broadly similar, so the Platinum version needs to be judged against its higher entry requirement and holding cost.
The card also earns GSC Reward Points. Spending at GSC, overseas and online earns 3x points, while other spending earns 1x point. Other spending of RM1,000 or more can earn an additional 1x point. Since 200 points = RM1, the 3x categories work out to about 1.5% effective value. That is fine, but not strong enough to carry the card by itself.
The category mix gives the card some use outside the cinema, but only up to a point. Online and overseas spending earn 3x points, but if you want a card mainly for cashback, miles or daily rewards, there are broader options. This card makes the most sense when the GSC benefits are something you will actually use.
One practical drawback is wallet support. Although HLB generally supports major digital wallets, the GSC co-brand card does not support Apple Pay. That matters for a card you may use often for cinema and in-person spending.
The Platinum version requires a minimum annual income of RM60,000, or a minimum fixed deposit pledge of RM12,000. That is much higher than the Gold version, while the long-term GSC benefits are largely similar. The main extra value is the 10 free movie tickets for new cardholders, so Platinum is not automatically the better pick. For many users, the Gold version may offer a cleaner balance between entry requirement, holding cost and GSC perks.
Verdict: The HLB GSC Platinum Credit Card is mainly worth considering if you are a frequent GSC moviegoer and specifically want the higher new-cardholder movie ticket offer. For long-term use, it does not look much stronger than the Gold version because the core GSC benefits are mostly similar. Unless the Platinum welcome tickets matter to you, the Gold version may be the more sensible choice.
