An Uncapped Cashback Card with Conservative Returns
The Hong Leong Bank Essential Card is positioned as an entry-level cashback card focused on simplicity and predictability rather than aggressive rewards. With a low minimum income requirement of RM24,000 per annum, it is accessible to a wide segment of users, including fresh graduates and first-time cardholders.
The card offers uncapped cashback across all eligible spending, with cashback rates determined by the cardholder’s total monthly spend. For cardholders spending RM3,000 or below per month, cashback rates are modest, ranging from 0.2% to 0.5% depending on category. Once total monthly spend exceeds RM3,000, cashback on retail shopping (such as clothing and departmental stores) and travel-related spending increases to 1%, while other categories remain unchanged.
Insurance transactions consistently earn 0.5% cashback, regardless of total spend, while all other eligible spending earns 0.2%. There is no monthly cashback cap, making returns predictable even at higher spending levels, albeit at relatively conservative rates.
The card supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. The annual fee is set at RM100 for the principal card and RM50 for supplementary cards. At present, there is no published automatic annual fee waiver, which reduces its attractiveness compared to other entry-level cashback cards in the market.
Verdict: The HLB Essential Card is best suited for users who prioritise simplicity, uncapped cashback and low entry barriers over maximising rebate percentages. While its unlimited structure avoids spending caps, the low cashback rates and absence of a clear annual fee waiver make it difficult to recommend for users seeking strong value or optimisation opportunities.
