A travel card for overseas spend and conditional lounge access

The CIMB Travel World Credit Card makes the most sense if you spend overseas and can meet its lounge access conditions. It is not just a simple "12 lounge visits" card. The value depends on where you spend, and whether you can hit the quarterly requirement.

The best rewards come from overseas, airline and duty-free spending, which earn up to 8x Bonus Points. Used well, the miles value is actually not bad. Malaysia Airlines can work out to around RM1.56 per mile, while KrisFlyer and Asia Miles are around RM1.88 per mile.

But that value is mainly tied to the 8x categories. Local spending earns 2x Bonus Points, while categories such as education, insurance and utilities usually earn only 1x Bonus Point. So if most of your spending is local, this card becomes much less interesting as a miles card.

The lounge access is useful, but there is a condition. Cardholders need to spend at least RM6,000 in each qualifying quarter to unlock the lounge entitlement for that quarter. The card offers up to 12 airport lounge accesses per calendar year, but this is a combined quota across Plaza Premium Lounge and Mastercard Travel Pass. It is not 12 visits for each programme.

The annual fee waiver also needs attention. For existing cardholders, the waiver requires RM60,000 annual spend. That is fine if you already spend a lot on overseas travel, but quite heavy if you only want lounge access once in a while.

Verdict: The CIMB Travel World Credit Card is worth considering if you have regular overseas, airline or duty-free spending and can naturally meet the RM6,000 quarterly spend for lounge access. The miles value can be good in the right categories. But for mostly local spending, unstable quarterly spend, or casual lounge use, this card is harder to justify.

Pros

  • Good miles value on overseas, airline and duty-free spending
  • MAS conversion can work out to around RM1.56 per mile
  • KrisFlyer and Asia Miles can work out to around RM1.88 per mile
  • Up to 12 airport lounge accesses per year
  • Lounge access covers Plaza Premium Lounge and Mastercard Travel Pass

Cons

  • Lounge access requires RM6,000 spend per qualifying quarter
  • Plaza Premium Lounge and Mastercard Travel Pass share the same 12-visit annual quota
  • Best miles value depends mainly on overseas, airline and duty-free spending
  • Local spending is much less rewarding
  • Annual fee waiver for existing users requires RM60,000 annual spend
