Simple Amex cashback, but hard to justify with an annual fee

The American Express Cash Back Gold Credit Card is a straightforward cashback card on the American Express network. It has a lower entry requirement than the American Express Platinum Credit Card, with a minimum income of RM30,000 per year. But lower entry does not automatically make it worth applying for.

The cashback is simple: 1% cashback on local spending and 1.5% cashback on overseas spending. There is no cashback cap, which is the main upside. You do not need to track monthly category limits or worry about losing value once you hit a cap.

The problem is that the rates are quite normal only. 1% local cashback is not hard to find elsewhere, and 1.5% overseas cashback is useful only if Amex is accepted where you spend. As usual with Amex, merchant acceptance matters a lot.

This card is also very different from the American Express Platinum Credit Card. Platinum has a much higher annual fee, but it also has Membership Rewards points and airline transfer value. The Cash Back Gold is easier to understand, but it does not have that same upside. What you see is basically what you get: uncapped cashback at modest rates.

The principal annual fee is RM70, with a first-year fee waiver. Supplementary cards cost RM45. Since there is no clear annual fee waiver condition shown, the second year is where the card becomes less appealing. You need enough spending just to offset the annual fee before the cashback feels meaningful.

Digital wallet support is limited to Apple Pay. That helps if you use iPhone and shop at merchants that accept Amex contactless payments. For Android users, or for merchants that do not accept Amex, the card is less convenient.

Verdict: The American Express Cash Back Gold Credit Card only makes sense if you specifically want a simple, uncapped Amex cashback card and can accept the annual fee after the first year. The cashback rates are easy to understand, but not strong. If you mainly want better everyday cashback, there are likely more practical cards to consider.
