Review

A travel-category rewards card with weak miles value

The AFFIN DUO+ Mastercard comes as part of the DUO+ pair with the DUO+ Visa. Of the two, this is the rewards card. It earns points on travel and online categories, but it is less straightforward than the Visa cashback card.

The card earns 3X AFFIN Rewards Points on airlines, e-commerce and online transactions, duty free, hotels and overseas transactions. Points earning is unlimited, so there is no monthly points cap to manage.

If your goal is air miles, the value is weak. Based on the effective conversion, the cost per mile works out to around RM6.67. That makes the 3X earn rate less attractive than it looks, especially for a card with airline, hotel, overseas and duty free categories.

This is why the Mastercard is harder to recommend on its own. The DUO+ Visa gives a clear 3% cashback rate on eligible contactless spending, while this card gives points that need to be converted into value later. For most users, the Visa will be easier to understand and easier to judge.

The Mastercard can still make sense if you already want the DUO+ pair and you have spending in its bonus categories. It is most relevant for users who spend on flights, hotels, overseas purchases or online transactions. But it should be treated as the secondary card in the pair, not the main reason to apply.

AFFIN Rewards Points are valid for 3 years. The DUO+ series charges RM100 for each principal card and RM50 for each supplementary card, waived for the first 3 years. After that, the annual fee is waived automatically with at least 12 retail transactions per year. The minimum income requirement is RM48,000 per year.

Verdict: The AFFIN DUO+ Mastercard is not a strong miles card, despite its travel-related bonus categories. The 3X earn rate is unlimited, but the effective air miles value is weak at around RM6.67 per mile. It is best treated as the secondary card in the DUO+ pair, while the Visa cashback card remains the stronger reason to apply.

Pros

  • 3X AFFIN Rewards Points on airlines, hotels, duty free, overseas and online spending
  • Unlimited points earning on eligible spending
  • Annual fee waived for the first 3 years
  • Easy annual fee waiver with 12 retail transactions per year
  • Low income requirement of RM48,000 per year

Cons

  • Weak air miles value at around RM6.67 per mile
  • Less compelling than the DUO+ Visa cashback card
  • Reward value is less direct than cashback
  • AFFIN Rewards Points are valid for 3 years only
  • Not strong enough to be the main reason to apply for DUO+
