A Petrol Cashback Card Built Around Weekend Spend
The AFFIN BHPetrol Mastercard is a co-branded petrol cashback card designed specifically for users who refuel regularly at BHPetrol stations and can concentrate their spending on weekends. Its reward structure is simple and predictable, but highly restricted to a single fuel brand.
Cashback is divided between weekdays and weekends. On weekdays, cardholders earn a flat 2% cashback on eligible BHPetrol transactions. On weekends, cashback increases based on the previous balance in the card account: 10% cashback if the previous balance is RM3,000 or above, or 5% cashback if below RM3,000. Cashback is capped at RM50 per statement cycle and applies only to purchases made at BHPetrol stations.
Given the cashback cap, cardholders who qualify for the 5% weekend rate will fully utilise the monthly cashback with approximately RM1,000 in petrol spend per statement cycle, while those eligible for the 10% rate will reach the cap even sooner. This makes the card most effective when petrol spending is planned and concentrated on weekends.
Other retail spending earns a nominal 1X AFFIN Rewards Point per RM1, making the card unsuitable for general use outside its core petrol function.
The card supports Google Pay for contactless payments. The minimum income requirement is set at RM24,000 per annum. The principal card carries an annual fee of RM150, which is waived in the first year. In subsequent years, the annual fee is automatically waived upon meeting either a minimum annual spend of RM24,000 or completing 12 retail transactions per year.
Verdict: The AFFIN BHPetrol Mastercard is best suited for users who consistently refuel at BHPetrol stations and can plan their petrol spending around weekends. While its cashback rate is attractive within its niche, the card’s usefulness is limited by its brand restriction and lack of broader everyday rewards.
