A low-cost AEON card for basic in-store rewards

The AEON Member Plus (AMP) Classic Credit Card is the easiest card to qualify for in the AMP series. It suits people who shop at AEON regularly and want access to Thank You Day cashback without applying for a higher-tier card. It is not the card to get if you want one credit card for most of your daily spending.

The main reason to consider it is AEON Thank You Day, held on the 20th and 28th of each month. Cardholders get 5% cashback at participating AEON Stores and AEON BiG Hypermarkets, capped at RM100 per month. For an entry-level card, that cap is decent. The catch is that the cashback only really helps if you can plan some AEON spending around those two dates.

Outside Thank You Day, the card relies on AEON Points. Points are redeemed at a fixed rate of 200 points = RM1. At AEON Stores, excluding Thank You Days, cardholders earn 2 bonus AEON Points for every RM2 spent, plus 1 base AEON Point per RM1 through AEON member recognition. In total, this works out to 4 AEON Points for every RM2 spent, or about 1% effective rebate.

For other eligible retail spending, the earn rate falls to 1 AEON Point per RM4 spent. Petrol, government-related payments, utilities and fees are excluded, so the card becomes much less useful outside AEON. It also has no dining or online cashback, which is where the Gold and Platinum cards have clearer advantages.

The extra benefits are basic. Cardholders can use a virtual card after approval, get up to 2 hours of parking rebates at selected AEON Malls and AEON BiG Hypermarkets, and receive a card made from biodegradable PLA material.

The AMP Classic is available in both Visa and Mastercard versions. Rewards and benefits are the same across both networks, so the choice mainly comes down to merchant acceptance.

The minimum income requirement is RM24,000 per year. The annual fee is RM30, waived for the first year and waived in later years with at least 12 transactions per year.

Verdict: The AEON Member Plus Classic is worth considering if you are a regular AEON shopper who wants a cheap card for Thank You Day cashback and basic AEON Points. It is easy to qualify for and cheap to keep, but the rewards are too narrow for it to work well as a main everyday credit card. If you want dining cashback, online cashback or stronger rewards outside AEON, the Gold or Platinum cards are better comparisons.

Pros

  • Low income requirement of RM24,000 per year
  • 5% cashback on AEON Thank You Day, capped at RM100 per month
  • AEON Points can be redeemed at a fixed cash-equivalent rate
  • Low RM30 annual fee with an easy 12-transaction waiver condition
  • Includes virtual card access and selected AEON parking rebates

Cons

  • Rewards are mostly limited to AEON spending
  • No dining or online cashback
  • Lower reward potential than the Gold and Platinum tiers
  • Weak earn rate for non-AEON retail spending
  • Not suitable as a main everyday credit card
